Medical Hair Loss
Wigs for Cancer & Medical Hair Loss
Losing your hair during medical treatment can be one of the hardest parts of a diagnosis. We are here to make finding a wig as gentle and straightforward as possible, with private fittings, compassionate guidance, and no pressure.
When to start looking
Many people wait until hair begins to thin or fall out, but we recommend scheduling a consultation before treatment starts whenever possible. That way, we can match your natural color, length, and style while you still have your hair as a reference, and your wig will be ready when you need it. If treatment has already begun or completed, that is perfectly fine too, bring a photo of your usual style, or let us help you explore something entirely new. There is no wrong time to reach out.
Synthetic vs. human hair
For most clients going through treatment, we recommend starting with a synthetic wig. Modern synthetic fibers hold their style wash after wash, with no curling or flat-ironing needed, which means less effort when energy is low. They are also lighter and more affordable, so you can own a second wig as a backup. Human hair wigs offer the most natural movement and unlimited heat styling, but they require more daily maintenance. During your consultation we will help you weigh comfort, budget, and lifestyle to find the right fit.
Comfort matters
Scalp sensitivity often increases during treatment, so we focus on soft, breathable cap constructions. Hand-tied caps are lightweight and gentle against tender skin, and many medical-grade wigs include a soft bamboo or cotton liner for extra comfort. If a wig ever feels too much, soft headwear and pre-tied scarves from lines like Christine Headwear are a breathable, pressure-free alternative for days at home or sleeping. We will make sure whatever you choose feels good on your head, not just looks good.
Insurance & coverage
Many insurance plans cover part or all of the cost of a wig when it is prescribed as a cranial prosthesis for medical hair loss. We provide detailed receipts with the appropriate product descriptions and HCPCS codes that you can submit for reimbursement. We recommend asking your oncology social worker or insurance provider about your specific cranial prosthesis benefit before your appointment, and we are happy to answer any questions about the documentation you will need from us.
